Although Mona Peterson, president of the Funk School Community Center, now lives in Holdrege, she has always considered herself a proud Funkite. Growing up north of Funk, she attended the Funk School and later taught art there for 30 years before its closure in 2007.

When the school closed, Peterson and several community members recognized how important it was to keep the building—and the spirit of the school—alive. Together, they formed the Funk School Community Center (FSCC) nonprofit organization and purchased the property with the help of a generous $10,000 rental agreement through the Loomis Public Schools (while they were completing renovations on their facility).

Since then, the FSCC has become a hub of community activity and creativity. The organization has led numerous improvements, including a new roof and flooring, fresh paint throughout, a fully equipped commercial kitchen, and the exciting addition of the Michael Forsberg WPA Gallery, which opened in 2025).

Today, the Center’s welcoming spaces—the community room and the gymnasium—are available to rent for weddings, showers, reunions, graduation and anniversary celebrations, holiday gatherings, and more.

Throughout the year, the FSCC board also hosts events that bring residents and visitors together to celebrate local culture and small-town spirit. Annual highlights include the March Chili Cook-Off, the springtime Crepes & Cranes event, the summertime Cupcake Festival, and the fall Harvest Meal and Antique Tractor Parade.

Thanks to dedicated leadership and strong community support, the FSCC continues to thrive as a vibrant gathering place—and a cornerstone of life in Funk, Nebraska.
